Purple and Black for a Cause: Potchefstroom Secondary School Takes a Stand Against GBV
Potchefstroom Secondary School turned an ordinary Friday into a statement. The school set aside the day to raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV), calling on its learners to break the silence and help build a school culture where everyone feels respected and safe.
A school united in purple
For the day, learners could swap their usual look for purple or black clothing, the colours associated with the fight against GBV. Photos shared by the school show learners gathered on the school grounds and holding up hand-made posters with anti-GBV messages.
"Today, we stand together to raise awareness, break the silence and take a stand against Gender-Based Violence," the school wrote in its post.
- Date: Friday, 16 October 2026
- Dress code: Purple or black
- Theme: Break the silence. Stop the violence. Be the change.
Knowing where to get help
The school's awareness flyer encouraged learners to be safe, to speak out and to get help, and listed support helplines for anyone affected. Bringing these messages into the classroom helps young people recognise abuse and know that they do not have to stay silent.
Building a culture of respect
The school said it wants to build "a culture of respect, equality and safety where every person is valued and protected". Awareness days like this one give learners, teachers and parents a shared starting point for difficult but necessary conversations.
What this means for you
Parents can use the day as an opening to talk to their children about respect, healthy relationships and where to turn for help. If you or someone you know is affected by gender-based violence, the national GBV Command Centre can be reached on 0800 428 428, 24 hours a day.
