Potchefstroom Dam Closes to the Public Until 30 November for SANDF Training
The JB Marks Local Municipality has announced a five-week closure of Potchefstroom Dam, also known as Lakeside Resort, one of the town's best-known spots for weekend outings, fishing and picnics. The notice was issued on Friday 23 October 2026, a few days before the closure started.
Why the dam is closed
According to the municipality, the closure follows a request by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to use the facility for training purposes during this period.
The municipality says the resort will be inaccessible to residents and the general public for the full duration of the closure.
Closure dates
- Closed from: Monday 26 October 2026
- Closed until: Monday 30 November 2026
- Public access resumes: Tuesday 1 December 2026
The municipality apologised for any inconvenience and thanked the public for its understanding.
What this means for you
If you were planning a braai, fishing trip or family day at Lakeside Resort in November, you will need to make other arrangements until the resort reopens on 1 December 2026. Clubs and groups that use the dam regularly should check with the municipality about any bookings that fall within the closure.
