Potch Unites as 6th Edition of Letsgo Potch Marathon Draws Thousands to JB Marks Oval
Supported by the provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR), the annual event aims to bring the community together and boost local economic vitality through sport. Serving as an official qualifier for both the Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon, the road race drew runners from across South Africa seeking to secure their qualification times for the 2027 ultra-marathon season.
Action-Packed Race Day Schedule
The multi-distance event catered to a broad spectrum of participants, featuring four timed races throughout the morning:
42.2km Marathon: Started early at 05:15 to allow marathoners cooler conditions to chase ultra-marathon qualifying standards.
21.1km Half Marathon: Flagged off at 06:00.
10km Road Race: Launched at 07:00.
5km Fun Run/Walk: Commenced at 08:00, welcoming families and recreational joggers.
Top Podium Finishes and Standout Performances
The day produced notable performances across several categories, highlighting local distance-running talent:
10km Victory: Tiisang Molopi claimed 1st position overall in the 10km event. Molopi, who develops under the guidance of multi-time Comrades Marathon champion Tete Dijana, delivered a strong victory on the local circuit.
21.1km Half Marathon: Aaron Moate captured 1st position in the 21.1km event, closely followed by Ian Slinger in 2nd place. Both athletes expressed gratitude post-race for claiming top honors on the Potchefstroom course.
Veterans Category (40โ49): North West runners turned in impressive results, with Kgosi Tsosane taking 2nd position and Peter Muthubi securing 3rd position in the Male Veterans division.
Senior Men (20โ39): Samuel Matsepe earned a 3rd position finish, with notable performances recorded by Tumelo Ruiters and Kgaugelo Rasogo.
Among those completing the course was Luvo Ntsevu, representing the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, who successfully used the race to secure qualifying prerequisites for both the 2027 Comrades and Two Oceans marathons. Athletes visiting from the provincial capital, including Duduzile Mtshali, Maatlametlo Makabolane, and Refilwe Ntsime, also commended race organizers for delivering a well-structured road event in the JB Marks Local Municipality.
Military Excellence: SANDF Celebrates National Championship Athletes
The event held added national significance as the 10km race incorporated the Athletics South Africa (ASA) National 10km Championships. Following the competition, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) leadership extended official congratulations to members of the Athletics SANDF team who represented the armed forces at the championships. Defense officials commended the military athletes for their hard work, dedication, and high-caliber representation, noting that the team flew the SANDF flag with honor and pride while competing against the nation's top road runners on the Potchefstroom course.

While thousands celebrated crossing the finish line at the cricket oval, event organizers issued an update addressing technical queries regarding official race timing data.
Race management confirmed that sports timing agency Protime is currently reviewing and verifying all electronic timing logs to ensure accurate, confirmed results for every participant across all four distances.
