Potch Girls' High Speakers Place in National Final of SALA Public Speaking Competition
Reaching a national final in public speaking takes months of writing, rehearsing and nerve. The High School for Girls, Potchefstroom (Potch Girls' High) celebrated four learners who did exactly that, each finishing in the top six of her division.
Results across three grades
The school's speakers placed in the Grade 9, Grade 11 and Grade 12 divisions of the national final. Thandeka Tofile claimed the highest individual placing, finishing third in the Grade 11 division, while the Grade 12 division featured two of the school's speakers.
- Atlegang Galeboe: joint 4th, Grade 9 division
- Thandeka Tofile: 3rd, Grade 11 division
- Laurette Strauss: joint 4th, Grade 12 division
- Niza Chaila: 6th, Grade 12 division
"Your voice matters"
In its message to the speakers, the school wrote: "Your voice matters. Use it to inspire, influence and make a difference."
The competition is run by the South African Literacy Association for English Home Language learners, and the national final brings together the top speakers from around the country.
A strong month for the school
The public speaking results come in a proud month for Potch Girls' High, which also congratulated learner Kyla Mthethwa on receiving her senior Protea colours for majorettes ahead of the MWF World Championships in Katowice, Poland.
