One Set Short of Bronze: Potchefstroom Gimnasium Tennis Teams Finish Fourth at Multisurface Tournament
The tournament tested players on three different court surfaces, clay, grass and hard courts, against the first teams of some of the country's leading tennis schools. The school said it was very proud of how both its teams performed over the four days.
A strong field of tennis schools
The Gimmies, as the school's learners are known, came up against the first teams of some of the country's top tennis schools. The schools taking part were:
- Duineveld
- Helpmekaar College (A and B teams)
- Noordheuwel
- Bethlehem Voortrekker
- Potchefstroom Gimnasium
Playing across clay, grass and hard courts in one event is unusual in school tennis, and it asks players to adapt their game quickly from one match to the next.
Decided by a single set
The boys' result was especially close. After the teams were level on results, the number of sets won had to decide the placings, and only one set separated the Gimmies boys from the team in third place.
The school praised all its players for the determination and commitment they showed in competing against the first teams of these schools, and wished them well for their next tournament.
What this means for you
For Potchefstroom Gimnasium parents and supporters, two fourth places against this field show that the school's tennis programme can hold its own against top tennis schools nationally. Keep an eye on the school's Facebook page for news of the teams' next tournament, and send the players your congratulations there.
