North West Pushes Final Transport Month Safety Drive for Taxis and Buses
As South Africa’s annual October Transport Month approaches its conclusion, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management (DCSTM) has intensified its public outreach, urging operators of buses and minibuses to prioritize passenger safety and exercise greater responsibility on provincial roadways
The awareness campaign highlights seven core operational directives targeting the commercial passenger transport sector:

  • Sobriety Compliance: Mandatory alcohol and substance screening for drivers before commencing any commercial journey to curb driving under the influence.
  • Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspections: Systematic mechanical assessments prior to departure, focusing on braking systems, tire roadworthiness, and general vehicle fitness.
  • Seatbelt Adherence: Enforced restraint compliance requiring both the driver and all passengers on board to wear safety belts throughout the journey.
  • Hazard Awareness: Proactive deceleration and increased vigilance around pedestrian crossings, construction zones, stop intersections, and traffic circles.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring: Consistent, timely mirror and shoulder checks to account for limited-visibility areas surrounding large transport vehicles.
  • Speed Management: Strict adherence to posted speed limits and road conditions to reduce reaction distances and rollover risks.
  • Fatigue Management: Regulated rest intervals, mandating that drivers take an operational break at least once every two hours on long trips.
The safety initiative aligns with broader institutional frameworks, including the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030, the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030), and the Arrive Alive safety platform. With the October awareness campaign concluding, provincial traffic authorities note that routine vehicle testing, roadblock operations, and law enforcement checks will remain active across major transit corridors to protect commuters into the high-traffic festive season.
