Nearly 2,000 Suspects Arrested as Operation Shanela Intensifies Across North West
The provincial crackdown, running from Monday, 14 September, to Sunday, 27 September 2026, involves coordinated sweeps across all districts, focusing on violent crime, illegal firearms, liquor compliance, and tracing wanted fugitives.
Detective Sweeps and Direct Arrests
As part of targeted suspect-raiding operations, provincial detectives traced and apprehended 669 wanted suspects. Concurrently, operational units detained nearly 1,300 additional individuals for a wide range of active offences:
Violent & Contact Crimes: 194 arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), 129 for common assault, 22 for robbery with aggravating circumstances, 13 for murder, 13 for business robbery, 9 for rape, 3 for attempted murder, and 2 for residential robbery.
Property & Infrastructure Offence: 56 for malicious damage to property, 39 for business burglary, and 33 for residential burglary.
Substance & Alcohol Offence: 181 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 137 for drug possession, 58 for illegal dealing in liquor, and 15 for drug dealing.
Contraband & Weapons: 9 for illegal possession of firearms, 2 for possession of ammunition, 1 for possession of explosives, and 17 for possession of illegal cigarettes.
Regulatory & Immigration: 154 individuals detained for contravening the Immigration Act.
Search Operations & Seizures
During the two-week drive, police teams searched 3,687 individuals, 1,374 vehicles, and 898 commercial and residential premises. Compliance inspections at 284 liquor outlets resulted in the immediate closure of 13 unlicensed establishments.
Confiscations across the province yielded seven firearms, comprising five handguns and two rifles, alongside ammunition, explosive material, stockpiles of illicit drugs, contraband tobacco products, confiscated alcohol, and seven impounded vehicles linked to criminal activities.
Provincial police management states that high-visibility patrols, intelligence-driven raids, and multi-disciplinary roadblocks under Operation Shanela 2 will continue across all major corridors in the North West to suppress violent crime and restore public safety.
