MILCOMP 2026 Officially Launches in Potch
Preparations Across Local Facilities
The week opened with comprehensive preparations as local and foreign teams rotated through several familiar sites around the town under the guidance of former competition participants serving as instructors. At the Kopanelo Sports Grounds inside Army Support Base Potchefstroom, groups practiced across the land obstacle course, the water obstacle course, and the grenade throwing lanes.

Outside the town proper, the sound of firearm practice could be heard as competitors familiarized themselves with the Z88 service pistol and R4 assault rifle at the Dirkie Uys Shooting Range, situated adjacent to 4 Artillery Regiment. These trial runs continued across Monday and Tuesday, ensuring that all teams had a chance to test each discipline before formal scoring commenced.

Official Opening Parade at Kopanelo
Ceremonial proceedings took place on Tuesday morning, 27 October, with the official Opening Parade hosted at the Kopanelo Sports Grounds. Brigadier General J.M. Motau, General Officer Commanding the South African Army Intelligence Formation, presided over the parade on behalf of Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, Chief of the SA Army, who serves as the event's custodian under Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya.

Addressing the parade, Brigadier General Motau described the competition as a measure of professionalism, physical capability, and operational discipline, noting that readiness is forged through teamwork and training long before deployment. The parade highlighted the presence of Regular and Reserve units representing the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy, and SA Military Health Service, along with international teams from Namibia, the Netherlands, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Cross-Border Exchange and Next Events
Following the parade, participants and leadership gathered at the nearby Kopanelo Sports Club for an informal meet-and-greet. Brigadier General Motau joined the competitors to talk through their training backgrounds and discuss the upcoming phases in a relaxed atmosphere, providing an opportunity for foreign delegations and local defense members to share experiences.

The competitive segment formally begins on Wednesday, 28 October, starting with the Water Obstacle Course heats at the Kopanelo Swimming Pool. With daily challenges scheduled across Potchefstroom's military training infrastructure through Sunday, 1 November, residents can expect continuous activity around the base as international and local athletes vie for honors in this year's tournament.
