Final Day Deciders: 8km Combat Run and Awards Ceremony Conclude MILCOMP 2026
Following days of rigorous testing in aquatic obstacle navigation, range marksmanship, land obstacles, and grenade throwing, the multi-nation tournament drew to a close with the demanding 8km Combat Run, followed immediately by a formal prize-giving banquet at Army Support Base (ASB) Potchefstroom.

Endurance Tested in General De La Rey Training Area

The competition's final athletic trial took place across the undulating landscape of the General De La Rey Training Area outside Potchefstroom. Participating contingents from South Africa, Namibia, the Netherlands, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe assembled early in the morning for a technical briefing and the distribution of chipped race numbers before being transported to the starting point deep inside the tactical training zone.

As morning temperatures climbed, runners pushed through taxing conditions along unpaved dirt tracks cutting across the vibrant green veld. The discipline required sustained cardiovascular endurance and mental stamina under load, testing the foundational physical fitness expected of operational military units. Throughout the 8-kilometre route, the spirit of cross-border camaraderie was evident as athletes from different armed services encouraged one another and assisted exhausted peers across the finish line.

Zimbabwe established the benchmark in the individual running event: Second Lieutenant Tapfuma crossed the line first with a winning time of 27 minutes and 16 seconds, securing top honors for his delegation. Concluding the physical challenge in high spirits, participants boarded troop transports back to ASB Potchefstroom, singing unit cadences to celebrate the completion of all active events.

Grand Honors at the Constand Viljoen Mess

Hours after finishing the combat run, delegates, high-ranking military dignitaries, and invited guests reconvened at the Constand Viljoen Mess inside ASB Potchefstroom for the official Prize Giving and closing banquet. The event was attended by general officers, flag officers, defense attachés, and academic representatives, formally acknowledging the week's competitive outcomes.

Brigadier General J.M. Motau, General Officer Commanding the South African Army Intelligence Formation, presided as the Main Functionary on behalf of Lieutenant General Lawrence K. Mbatha, Chief of the South African Army, designated by the Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, to oversee the competition. Brigadier General Motau presented medals, floating trophies, and certificates of merit to individual category winners and top-performing formations across the week's disciplines.

Strategic Significance of Military Skills

In her keynote address, Brigadier General Motau emphasized the distinctive purpose of the event within defense structures:

"The Military Skills Competition is not the Fittest Soldier competition. The Military Skills Competition is not Military Pentathlon. The Military Skills Competition occupies a unique place within the South African National Defence Force. It remains far more than a sporting event... a unique platform that magnifies critical soldiering skills essential for combat readiness and military professionalism."

She noted that every medal, trophy, and citation awarded represented tangible discipline, sacrifice, and physical adaptability forged across obstacle courses, firing points, and swimming lanes. Emphasizing the value of international cooperation, she added that "every obstacle overcome, every lesson learned, every friendship formed, and every challenge faced has contributed to your growth as a soldier."

Concluding her remarks, Brigadier General Motau urged all participants to serve as ambassadors for military excellence, calling on them to inspire colleagues at home and prepare teams for the upcoming MILCOMP 2027.

Special commendations were extended to key coordinating bodies, including the South African Army Intelligence Formation, Army Support Base Potchefstroom, the Barney Molokoane Intelligence Regiment, the Defence Reserves Division, the Reserve Force Council, and corporate sponsors whose logistical backing ensured the successful execution of the 19th edition.

The successful conclusion of the 2026 competition marks another benchmark in multilateral defense diplomacy and tactical evaluation in the North West province, leaving participating defense forces with refined proficiencies and deepened regional ties.
