Dream Big: Olympic Silver Medallist Hezekiel Sepeng Returns to Potch Boys' High
Potch Boys' High welcomed one of its most celebrated Old Boys back to campus. The school said it was “deeply honoured” by the visit, which gave today's learners a chance to hear first-hand from an athlete whose achievement inspired a nation.
A pioneer at the school
According to the school, Sepeng was one of the first black learners to attend Potchefstroom High School for Boys. During his visit he spoke about his extraordinary journey, including the race that made him a household name.
The silver that opened doors
Sepeng won the silver medal in the 800 m at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The school described it as a win that inspired a nation and opened doors for generations of young South African athletes.

A clear message to the boys
The school summed up his message to learners: it does not matter where you come from or what you have; what matters is where you are going. Dream big and believe in yourself.
“Thank you, Hezekiel, for touching our hearts and continuing to embody the true spirit of an esteemed Old Boy,” the school wrote.
What this means for you
Visits like this connect current learners with the school's history and show what is possible beyond the classroom. Parents and Old Boys can follow the school's Facebook page, where the post also links to footage of Sepeng's 1996 Olympic race.
