Defence Works Formation Hands Over Refurbished Military Infrastructure in Potchefstroom
The Defence Works Formation, operating under the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), marked a key operational milestone on October 7, 2026, with the formal handover of newly restored and upgraded military infrastructure in Potchefstroom.

The initiative, executed by the Regional Works Unit North West, was highlighted during a ceremonial event to transfer ownership of the upgraded facilities back to their respective user entities.

The official proceedings were officiated by Brigadier General N.D. Netshifhefhe, Director Operations for the Defence Works Formation, and hosted by Captain (South African Navy) J.V. Ndhlovu, the Officer Commanding Regional Works Unit North West. The event began with an inspection and tour of the upgraded sites, led by Major T.G. Lenyora, followed by a devotional opening featuring scripture reading and prayer conducted by Chaplain S.J. Oosthuizen.

The comprehensive restoration scope encompassed several key military installations and residential units across the area. Among the renovated properties were one Bangalore unit, the 17 Maintenance Unit facilities, two residential houses situated on Staakvuur and Opvolg streets in the Military Village, and the Facilities Management and Repairs building located at the Regional Works Unit North West complex.

Delivering the keynote address, Brigadier General Netshifhefhe commended the regional team for their professionalism and highlighted the direct connection between well-maintained infrastructure, military operational readiness, and troop morale. He emphasized that Regional Works Unit North West must set a benchmark by ensuring personnel live and work in top-class facilities. The facilities were formally accepted by representatives of the receiving units, Colonel S.T.J. Johnson for the School of Artillery, Lieutenant Colonel M.H. Mosimane for Army Support Base Potchefstroom, and Major T.R. Aphiri for 17 Maintenance Unit, culminating in a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The formal ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Lieutenant Colonel M.G. Maseng, who expressed appreciation to all participating stakeholders and military branches. Information for this report was sourced from the SA National Defence Force.
