Critical Grid Upgrade for Potchefstroom
The JB Marks Local Municipality, situated in the North West Province and encompassing the key administrative and educational hub of Potchefstroom, has formally notified stakeholders of an upcoming critical power interruption at the Potchefstroom Distribution Substation (Potch DS).

The planned interruption has been initiated at the request of national power utility Eskom to finalize essential infrastructure repairs and reintegrate critical electrical equipment into the regional transmission network.

Transformer Energisation and Capacity Restoration

According to the official communication released by the municipality's Corporate Services and Communication Unit, the facility has been running on a single 132/88/66 kV transformer after a secondary unit was temporarily decommissioned to undergo technical maintenance and repairs. Those maintenance interventions have now concluded successfully.

The primary objective of the scheduled shutdown is to energise and commission the refurbished second transformer. Bringing this unit back online is designed to restore full design capacity to the Potch DS Substation and re-establish critical redundancy, ensuring a functional backup remains operational in the event of unforeseen component trips or technical failures.

Operational Details and Safety Directives

The scheduled power interruption is slated to run for an estimated duration of one hour and thirty minutes, scheduled between 14:00 and 15:30. The outage scope spans across the entire Greater Potchefstroom region, impacting private households, local businesses, government departments, and educational institutions within the Tlokwe operational area.

Municipal engineering officials have issued standard safety protocols advising all consumers and property owners to treat every electrical connection, appliance, and installation as live throughout the maintenance window. Electricity distribution may be re-energised and normalized ahead of schedule without preliminary notification once Eskom’s technical crews complete the switching and commissioning procedure.

Municipal authorities expressed regret for the disruption caused to daily activities, noting that while temporary outages disrupt commercial and domestic routines, the energisation of the second transformer represents a decisive step toward stabilizing the long-term electrical network. Rebuilding equipment redundancy remains vital to mitigating widespread blackouts and securing continuous power delivery across the Greater Potchefstroom region.
