Statement Wins for Bulls and Stormers reshape URC Table as Local Derbies Heat Up
The third round of the 2026/27 Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) delivered high-octane drama as South Africa’s premier franchises collided in two thrilling regional derbies on Saturday.

The Vodacom Bulls and DHL Stormers put on commanding performances at home to claim decisive victories over the 10bet Lions and Hollywoodbets Sharks respectively, brought an end to their opponents' unbeaten runs, and brought a major shake-up to the overall competition standings.

The Vodacom Bulls were in clinical form at Loftus Versfeld, tearing through the 10bet Lions 57-15, while the DHL Stormers put on a stellar six-try display at DHL Stadium to outplay the Hollywoodbets Sharks 39-22. These results triggered a massive shift on the overall URC log: the Vodacom Bulls catapulted to third place and the DHL Stormers moved into fourth (both tied on 11 points). The Hollywoodbets Sharks dropped to fifth position with 10 points, while the 10bet Lions slipped to seventh spot on nine points.

At the top of the overall standings, Edinburgh (14 points) and Glasgow Warriors (13 points) stand as the only remaining undefeated sides in the tournament after three rounds. All four South African franchises will now pause their URC commitments to compete in the European showpieces, the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, before returning to league action in two weeks' time.

Bulls Power Over Lions in Nine-Try Jukskei Derby Masterclass

At Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, the Vodacom Bulls delivered a ruthless attacking clinic, surging past their Gauteng rivals, the 10bet Lions, with a emphatic 57-15 victory. Powered by a Fan Vote Man of the Match performance from backrower Cameron Hanekom, the Bulls dominated physical collisions and converted relentless pressure into nine tries to the Lions' two. The heavy loss brought a sudden halt to the Johannesburgers' impressive start to the season following their victories over Leinster and Ospreys.

The host side opened the scoring in the 10th minute through center Harold Vorster, who gathered a delicate chip kick to touch down. The Lions answered back eight minutes later through a powerful rolling maul finished by Siba Qoma, with Chris Smith’s conversion temporarily giving the visitors a 7-5 lead. However, the tide turned firmly in the Bulls' favor shortly after when Johan Grobbelaar forced his way over from a pick-and-go. In the build-up, Lions scrumhalf Morné van den Berg was yellow-carded for a deliberate knockdown, putting the visitors under severe pressure.

Capitalizing on the extra man, Hanekom struck twice in six minutes during a devastating second-quarter spell. Jeandré Rudolph added a fifth try right on the half-time hooter to stretch the Bulls' advantage to a dominant 31-10 at the break.

The Bulls picked up right where they left off in the second half. Springbok star Canan Moodie extended the lead to 36-10 in the 44th minute after diving over out wide thanks to a long, looping pass. Although Morné Brandon grabbed a second try for the Lions off a driving maul in the 50th minute, the Bulls completely ran away with the contest in the final quarter.

Lock JF van Heerden crashed over in the 68th minute before Cheswill Jooste gather a precise cross-field kick to score six minutes later. Winger Sebastian de Klerk capped off the night after the final hooter with a brilliant line-break, stepping through the defense to score underneath the crossbar. Combined conversions from Curwin Bosch and Handré Pollard sealed a statement 57-15 derby win.

Six-Try Stormers Tame Sharks in Coastal Battle

In Cape Town, the DHL Stormers treated their home crowd to a sublime display of attacking rugby, outscoring the Hollywoodbets Sharks six tries to three to claim a deserved 39-22 victory at DHL Stadium. Backed by an unstoppable scrum platform and sharp backline distribution led by Fan Vote Man of the Match Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, the Capetonians bounced back brilliantly from their Round 2 setback against Edinburgh.

The Stormers showed their intent right from the opening whistle. In the sixth minute, rapid ball movement sent Seabelo Senatla over in the corner, and Feinberg-Mngomezulu added a penalty goal shortly after to construct an early 8-0 lead. The Sharks, entering as log leaders after defeating Leinster, showed resilience as Manu Tshituka crashed over from close range, and a penalty goal from Gianni Lombard leveled the scores at 8-8 by the 30th minute.

Discipline proved costly for the Sharks late in the first half. Substitute Matt Romao was sin-binned in the 34th minute, creating space for Hacjivah Dayimani to force his way over. Right before half-time, hooker André-Hugo Venter drove over for the Stormers' third try, while Tshituka was also shown a yellow card, leaving the Durbanites down to 13 players and trailing 22-8 at the break.

The Stormers wasted no time taking advantage of their numerical upper hand after the restart. Just one minute into the second half, Leolin Zas scooped the ball from a breakdown to dive over for the four-try bonus point. Dayimani then added his second try of the match from a dominant forward surge to stretch the lead to 34-8.

The Sharks refused to yield without a fight. Romao redeemed himself with a well-worked maul try, and Phepsi Buthelezi cut through defenders shortly after to bring the score back to 34-22 with under 20 minutes remaining. However, the Stormers regained total control in the closing stages, with substitute hooker JJ Kotze driving over for their sixth try to seal a morale-boosting 39-22 home victory.
