A Sea of Purple Across the North West: Hollard Daredevil Run Champions Men's Health Awareness
Streets, tracks, and open fields across the North West took on a distinctive shade of purple on Friday, 23 October, as men and boys ran in nothing but matching Speedos for the annual Hollard Daredevil Run.

The nationwide 5 km charity event challenges social taboos by using lighthearted public spectacle to drive urgent awareness and early screening for prostate and testicular cancer.

Potchefstroom Leads the Late-Afternoon Pack

In Potchefstroom, participants converged for a 16:00 start, bringing energetic camaraderie to the route as late-afternoon temperatures cooled. The local leg drew a notable turnout of university students, sports clubs, and residents uniting behind the cause.

Runners sported purple body paint, sun hats, and official Daredevil speedos, navigating dirt trails before celebrating with ice baths and group photos.

The gathering maintained an upbeat tone while reinforcing essential health messages. Participants and organizers noted that shedding clothes and running in public helps normalize conversations about medical checkups, which men routinely delay or avoid due to social stigma.

Regional Presence Across the Province

While the flagship national gathering took place at Zoo Lake Sports Club in Johannesburg, Hollard coordinates synchronized satellite legs across South Africa to enable decentralized participation:

LocationScheduled StartCommunity Focus
Mafikeng07:30Early morning provincial capital run beating the midday heat.
Rustenburg08:00 & 16:00Dual slots accommodating corporate teams, running clubs, and shift workers.
Potchefstroom16:00Afternoon gathering led by student groups and local runners.

For runners who could not attend an organized satellite venue, the event structure enabled participants to register as independent "neighborhood" runners and complete their own 5 km routes locally.

The Cause & Measurable Impact

Every cent raised through registration packs and direct donations is distributed between two beneficiary organizations: the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa (PCF).

The initiative directly addresses key health risks facing South African men:

Looking Ahead: The Conversation Continues

As runners wrapped up their routes and packed away their running gear in Potchefstroom, Rustenburg, and Mafikeng, participants agreed that crossing the 5 km finish line is only a starting point. Organizers and health advocates urged men not to leave the message on the trail, but to translate the event’s momentum into clinic visits, annual screening appointments, and regular health checkups throughout the year.
