Transport Minister Inspects N12 Sinkhole
Organized under the banner of October Transport Month, the visit provides key government bodies and technical agencies with an on-site platform to review road safety measures, evaluate ground stabilization assessments, and interface with stakeholders tasked with delivering the remediation project.
Critical Freight Corridor Impacted by Ground Subsidence
The N12 functions as a primary economic artery in South Africa, linking the Western Cape, Northern Cape, North West, and Gauteng provinces. Severe geological subsidence along the route near Stilfontein has compromised structural integrity and disrupted daily commuter traffic and interprovincial freight movements.
To mitigate safety hazards associated with the sinkhole, road authorities have closed the westbound carriageway between JB Marks Road and Buffelsfontein Road in Klerksdorp. Traffic management measures remain in force while engineering evaluations determine ground stability beneath the impacted roadway.
Project Timeline and Engineering Interventions
Construction and civil engineering works to rehabilitate the affected corridor are scheduled to begin in February 2027. Full restoration and reopening of the closed westbound carriageway are slated for completion in December 2027.
The upcoming delegation visit will review project milestones, examine ground remediation specifications, and coordinate technical collaboration across local, provincial, and national transport entities ahead of physical construction.
Media Briefing and Attendance Arrangements
Members of the media have been invited to observe the site inspection and engage the technical teams and government leadership. The details are as follows:
Date: Friday, 30 October 2026
Time: 09:30 for 10:00 SAST
Venue: N12 National Road Main Project Site (between JB Marks Road and Buffelsfontein Road, Klerksdorp)
Media representatives attending the briefing are requested to confirm accreditation through Department of Transport and SANRAL communications liaisons.
The on-site assessment underscores the technical complexity of remediating major dolomitic or structural subsidences across high-capacity corridors. Coordination between SANRAL and all tiers of government will determine the pace and safety of rehabilitating the N12 before large-scale operations commence early next year.
