R1.4 Million Illicit Alcohol Distillery Uncovered on Stilfontein Farm
The raid, conducted late on Thursday night by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing Unit, led to the seizure of illicit alcohol and processing equipment valued at an estimated R1.4 million.
Late-Night Raid Triggers Suspect Flight
Acting on intelligence regarding illicit manufacturing on the agricultural property, officers converged on the premises around 22:00. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, several individuals fled the scene on foot into surrounding farmland.
Officers apprehended four men aged between 28 and 54. According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, the suspects include a South African national—identified as the son of the farm owner—and three undocumented Malawian nationals.
The four face charges relating to contraventions of liquor, revenue, and immigration legislation.
Equipment, Ethanol, and Spirits Confiscated
During the search of the property, investigators discovered an active distillery setup producing counterfeit spirits, including illegal batches of vodka and whiskey.
Police confiscated specialized production equipment, including:
Large storage tanks containing suspected bulk ethanol
Commercial mixing pots and flow bins
Industrial-grade flavourants and colourants used to simulate commercial alcohol brands
Samples from the bulk storage tanks were secured by forensics and sent for chemical testing.

Provincial Leadership Inspects Active Crime Scene
The high-profile bust drew immediate attention from provincial government officials. North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi visited the site alongside Executive Mayor of Matlosana City Local Municipality and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Mayor Nikiwe Num during the province’s ongoing Thuntsa Lerole service delivery programme.
Inspecting the scene alongside law enforcement, North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Tsotso Tlhapi, expressed concern over the scale of the illegal operation.
"These illicit plants compromise our economy in many ways. They employ undocumented foreign nationals and they kill our formal liquor traders," MEC Tlhapi remarked.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams commended the arresting officers, noting that law enforcement will continue targeting criminal syndicates operating in the illegal alcohol trade to protect legal traders and shield consumers from unregulated chemical hazards.
