Matlosana Mayor and Minister Creecy Inspect R80 Million N12 Sinkhole Repairs at Stilfontein
The sinkhole next to Stilfontein has closed one side of the N12 between Buffelsfontein Road and JB Marks Road, forcing traffic onto a contra-flow. The oversight visit gave the Minister a briefing on where the repairs stand and how long motorists can expect the disruption to last.
What the Minister was told
The visit started at the Stilfontein Council Chambers, where SANRAL Project Manager Layton Leseane and Contract Engineer Karel van Rooyen briefed the delegation, together with the main contractor team. The municipality said the contractor is currently in the design phase and is proposed to approach a specialist panel for construction.
According to the briefing, the area is underlain by dolomitic rock, and the rupture of Midvaal's decommissioned water pipeline on mobilised weathered material triggered the subsidence.

The project at a glance
- Project: Emergency rehabilitation of a new sinkhole on the N12 between km 8.4 (Buffelsfontein Road) and km 9.4 (JB Marks Road)
- Closed: West-bound carriageway between JB Marks Road and Buffelsfontein Road
- Traffic: Contra-flow on the east-bound carriageway
- Started: 20 July 2026
- Expected completion: End of 2027
- Value: R80 million
The municipality said the project is expected to create job opportunities for residents of Matlosana and surrounding areas during construction.
What was said on site
According to the statement, Minister Creecy thanked the Executive Mayor for his constant support on traffic management and on the backup plan, and assured him that the site will be continuously maintained until the end of the project.

What this means for you
Motorists using the N12 past Stilfontein should expect the contra-flow to stay in place for a long time, with completion only expected at the end of 2027. Keep to the speed limit, stay in your lane through the contra-flow and allow extra travel time between Klerksdorp and Stilfontein.
