Matlosana Inspects Civic Centre and Klerksdorp Court for Disability Access
The City of Matlosana's Disability Desk and the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities are running a three-day disability inclusion programme at the Protea Hotel in Klerksdorp from 20 to 22 October 2026, including access inspections of public buildings.

The programme looks at how well government buildings in Klerksdorp serve people with disabilities. It combines training for officials, inspections of public facilities against universal access standards, and a plan to fix the gaps that are found.

Who is involved

The Disability Desk in the Office of the Executive Mayor is running the programme with the national Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD). Ms Simmi Pillay from the DWYPD is coordinating it.

Disability Desk Coordinator Mr Dito Maine, Director for Corporate Services Mr Marx Moabelo and Ms Inno from Infrastructure and Building Construction attended the meeting and site visits.

What happened on day one

The first day covered the agenda and purpose of the programme, followed by site visits to the City of Matlosana Civic Centre and the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court to check whether they comply with disability inclusion standards.

Persons with disabilities took part in the inspections and pointed out barriers that limit inclusive access to government facilities and to information.

What the programme aims to do

According to the municipality, the aim is to strengthen capacity on disability inclusion, carry out compliance inspections in line with universal access standards and develop an intervention plan to address the gaps identified.

What this means for you

If you or someone in your family struggles to get into or around a municipal building, or to access municipal information, this is a good time to raise it with the Disability Desk in the Office of the Executive Mayor so it can be considered in the intervention plan.
