Matlosana Fines Klerksdorp CBD Shops and Confiscates Unfit Food in By-law Operation
The City of Matlosana fined spares shops, confiscated food unfit for human consumption and warned businesses over poor hygiene during a joint law enforcement operation in the Klerksdorp CBD.

The operation is part of the City's continuing enforcement drive in the Central Business District to make sure businesses comply with licensing requirements, health regulations and municipal by-laws. It focused on spares shops, general dealers and spaza shops.

Who took part

The City worked with the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Environmental Health team, the South African Police Service and the Department of Home Affairs. The team was led by Dr Keaobaka Boikanyo, Director of Public Safety, supported by Mr Pheelo Setona, Director of Community Development.

What inspectors found

Spares shops displaying vehicle parts on public pavements were fined for obstructing pedestrian walkways. At shops and spaza shops, inspectors found food products unfit for human consumption, including repackaged poultry products, which were confiscated. Businesses with poor hygiene and cleanliness standards were given warnings.

One shop was found to be operating an illegal scrapyard. At a shop in Enoch Sontonga Street, inspectors found imported herbal oils with no visible labels showing ingredients, manufacturing dates or sell-by dates, and the owner could not give adequate information about the products. The City says this raised concerns about traceability and consumer safety. Two undocumented foreign nationals were taken by the Department of Home Affairs for further processing.

More operations to come

The City says it will keep running joint operations with law enforcement and regulatory authorities, and has urged business owners to comply with all applicable legislation and health and safety requirements to avoid penalties and further action.

What this means for you

Shoppers should check packaging, labels and sell-by dates, especially on meat and poultry, and avoid unlabelled products. Business owners in the CBD should make sure their licences are in order and keep stock off public pavements. Enquiries can be directed to the City's communication office.
