Matlosana Empowers Next Generation of Agricultural Leaders
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality continues to strengthen its role as an economic and educational hub for agriculture in the North West province.

Through key municipal entities like the Matlosana National Fresh Produce Market (MNFPM), the municipality actively fosters youth development, industry collaboration, and sustainable food security by connecting academic learning with practical market operations.

On Friday, 09 October 2026, the MNFPM hosted an educational tour for 40 learners from the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture. The initiative was designed to give students direct exposure to the agricultural value chain, bridging the gap between theoretical classroom instruction and real-world market dynamics. Throughout the visit, learners were taken through the comprehensive post-harvest journey, gaining insight into critical operational stages including produce receiving, quality control, grading, packaging, and commercial marketing.

The tour provided an interactive platform for the learners to connect with key industry professionals and municipal operational teams. Among those engaging with the students were Market Agents, Procon Quality Assurance personnel, and local farmer Ms Kgobe, who shared practical insights into supply chain dynamics and farm-to-market strategies. Presentations were also delivered by various municipal market role players, including Produce Control Clerks, Operations Assistants, and the Stakeholder Manager. These presentations highlighted diverse career paths within the agricultural sector and emphasized the vital administrative and logistical frameworks that keep the fresh produce market running efficiently.

Highlighting the municipality's dedication to youth empowerment and long-term food sustainability, MNFPM Head of Department for Marketing, Lorato Maphongo, emphasized the broader impact of such educational initiatives: "At MNFPM, we believe that investing in agricultural education and empowering the next generation is an important step towards a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector. When we grow our future farmers, we grow our agricultural future."

By facilitating direct engagement between aspiring agriculturalists and established industry practitioners, the City of Matlosana demonstrates its commitment to developing skilled local talent. Through ongoing partnerships and practical learning opportunities at facilities like the Matlosana National Fresh Produce Market, the municipality remains dedicated to advancing economic growth and securing a resilient agricultural sector for the region.
