Klerksdorp Museum Commemorates Anglo-Boer War Anniversary with Special October Exhibitions and Upcoming Expert Discourse
The Klerksdorp Museum has officially launched a month-long educational and cultural program commemorating a pivotal moment in South African history.

The public commemoration focuses on the opening conflict of the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), specifically marking the historic events that took place at Kraaipan on 12 October 1899. By offering specialized galleries, detailed historical artifacts, and expert-led discussions, the museum aims to provide local residents, families, and history enthusiasts with an immersive look into the regional impact of the war.

The featured temporary exhibition, titled The Spark of War: The Kraaipan Incident, details the very first military engagement of the conflict. On 12 October 1899, Boer forces successfully derailed and captured The Mosquito, an armored train belonging to the British military, at Kraaipan. The historic location of Kraaipan lies approximately 230 kilometers west of Klerksdorp, roughly 60 kilometers northwest of Delareyville, and 70 kilometers southwest of Mahikeng, serving as an important regional backdrop for the museum's current display.

Throughout the remainder of October, visitors can view a themed photo exhibition dedicated to the Kraaipan incident. Beyond the temporary gallery, guests are encouraged to explore the museum's permanent Anglo-Boer War exhibit, which incorporates evocative artwork, detailed historical captions, authentic wartime artifacts, and interactive multimedia video installations. Admission to the museum is free of charge during standard operating hours:

  • Mondays to Fridays: 10:00 – 16:00

  • Saturdays: 09:00 – 11:30

  • Sundays: 14:00 – 17:00

To conclude the month-long series of events, the museum will host its popular Saturday Discourse on 14 November 2026. The event will feature guest speaker Mr. Johan Wolfaardt, a respected Anglo-Boer War historian from the Potchefstroom Museum, who will present expert insights on the era. Due to limited venue capacity, advance booking is required. Members of the public can secure seating or make general inquiries by contacting Ms. Thandi Mathiba via telephone at 018 487 8900 or email at dmathiba@klerksdorp.org, or by emailing Mr. Bert Gaffen at bertgaffen@museumhistorian.org.za.

Through these accessible public displays and expert lectures, the Klerksdorp Museum continues its efforts to preserve regional heritage and foster community engagement with local historical milestones.
