City of Matlosana and Human Settlements Host Roundtable for Women Contractors
The City of Matlosana and the Department of Human Settlements held a roundtable and capacity development session for women in construction at Rio Casino on Thursday 1 October 2026, according to a media statement on the City of Matlosana Facebook page.

The session forms part of the Department of Human Settlements' programme to empower, accredit and develop women contractors in the province. According to the municipality, it aims to give women access to opportunities in the human settlements sector and a pathway into an industry that has been dominated by men.

What the programme offers

The municipality said the initiative provides training in basic construction skills, health and safety, regulatory compliance and registration on the Municipal Database.

Discussions focused on the needs and challenges women contractors face, including access to projects, compliance, capacity development and networking. North West Human Settlements HOD Mme Kgomotso Mahlobo said the session aims to support women with NHBRC registration, help within municipal building departments, access to credit and building material suppliers, technical skills and socio-cultural barriers.

Who took part

The panel included COGTA MEC Gaoage Molapisi, Executive Mayor Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, Speaker of Council Cllr Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya, Single Whip Cllr Rose Thabanchu and MMC for Planning and Human Settlements Cllr Portia Mtshawulana, along with SAWIC, the NHBRC and senior officials.

In his welcome address, Cllr Mahlophe quoted the late US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made."

MEC Molapisi introduced senior managers who will be available to assist women contractors and said government must be deliberate in creating a conducive environment.

What this means for you

Women contractors in Matlosana who want to take part in human settlements projects should make sure they are registered on the Municipal Database and with the NHBRC. For more information, contact the City of Matlosana's communication office.
