Over 120 Arrested, Firearms Seized as Joint Forces Conduct Anti-Illegal Mining Raid Near Fochville
The pre-dawn raid, launched at 03:00 under the banner of Operation Prosper / Karabo, involves a multi-agency task force comprising the South African Police Service (SAPS) Gauteng, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI / Hawks), Department of Home Affairs Immigration Officers, and tactical security units from Sibanye-Stillwater.
Military units initially established a tight perimeter around the operational zone before tactical police units and mine security personnel moved in to execute targeted searches.
During the sweep, law enforcement officers recovered an array of weaponry, including three handguns, an AK-47 assault rifle, a homemade pistol, and live ammunition. Forces are also seizing illegal gold-processing equipment, including gas cylinders, custom processing drums (phendukas), and stockpiles of raw gold-bearing material.
Regional Context & Enforcement Strategy
Today's raid comes as law enforcement intensifies its presence across the West Rand following a surge in violent syndicate activity and territorial disputes over illicit mining operations.
Operation Prosper serves as an active, national framework authorizing SANDF personnel to provide tactical and operational support to the SAPS in high-risk zones.
The 121 detained individuals are currently being processed and face pending charges, including contravention of the Immigration Act, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and illegal possession of gold-bearing materials.
