More Than 200 Families Receive Houses at Elijah Barayi Mega Project in Carletonville
More than 200 qualifying beneficiaries received the keys to new houses at the Elijah Barayi Mega Project in Carletonville on Wednesday 21 October 2026, in a handover led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The Gauteng Provincial Government handed the houses over at the Elijah Barayi Mega Project, one of the larger housing developments in Merafong City. The municipality described the day as a significant milestone for the families who moved from waiting lists to owning a home.

Who led the handover

Premier Lesufi was accompanied by the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, and the Executive Mayor of Merafong City Local Municipality, Cllr Nozuko Best.

What the municipality said

In its post, Merafong City said that for the beneficiaries, receiving the keys represents more than just a house.

"It is the fulfilment of dreams, renewed hope, dignity and the opportunity to build a better future for their families," the municipality said.

The municipality said it welcomes the milestone in advancing access to adequate housing and improving the lives of communities in Merafong City.

What this means for you

If you are on the housing waiting list in Merafong and want to know where your application stands, contact the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements or the Merafong City housing office directly, and keep your ID and application reference number at hand.

Be wary of anyone who asks for money to move you up the list or to secure a house; government housing allocations are free to qualifying beneficiaries.
