Merafong Warns of Eight-Hour Power Cut in Khutsong South and Welverdiend on 20 October
Parts of Khutsong South, Welverdiend and Elijah Barayi will be without electricity from 08:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday 20 October 2026 while Eskom carries out planned maintenance, according to a public notice on the Merafong City Local Municipality Facebook page.

The notice, dated 14 October 2026 and signed by Municipal Manager Dumisani D. Mabuza, says the shutdown is needed so that Eskom can do essential maintenance on the electricity grid safely. Households and businesses in the affected areas will be off for about eight hours.

Which areas are affected

The work affects the Frikkie van der Merwe and Khutsong South substations. The notice lists these areas:

When the power will be off

A safety warning

The municipality says residents should "treat all electrical installations and appliances as live throughout the shutdown period, as electricity supply may be restored at any time without prior notice."

What this means for you

Charge phones and power banks the night before, keep fridges closed during the day, and plan meals and any work that needs electricity around the 08:00 to 16:00 window.

Switch off sensitive appliances at the plug before the shutdown so they are not damaged when the power comes back, and do not work on any wiring while the supply is off. The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience.
