Merafong Reports Unplanned Power Outage in Dumela and Dondola Streets, Wedela
Households in Dumela Street and Dondola Street in Wedela are without electricity after a mini-substation failed, and Merafong City Local Municipality said on Wednesday 28 October 2026 that it cannot yet say when power will be restored.

The notice, signed by Municipal Manager Dumisani D. Mabuza, informs residents of an unplanned outage affecting the two Wedela streets. It explains what went wrong and warns residents to stay safe around electrical equipment while the supply is off.

What caused the outage

The municipality says the outage was caused by a failure of the mini-substation in Dumela Street. A replacement mini-substation was deployed, but unforeseen technical challenges came up during the process. The municipality's technical team is attending to these problems so that the supply can be restored.

When power will be back

According to the notice, the estimated time for restoring electricity remains unknown at this stage. The municipality says it is making every effort to resolve the technical challenges and restore power as soon as possible, and that residents will be kept informed of developments.

Safety warning

The notice states: "Residents are urged to treat all electrical installations and equipment as live at all times, even during the outage, to avoid the risk of electric shock or injury."

The municipality apologised for the inconvenience and thanked affected residents for their patience, cooperation and understanding.

What this means for you

If you live in Dumela or Dondola Street, plan for the power to stay off for some time, keep fridges closed as much as possible and switch off sensitive appliances so they are not damaged when the supply returns. Do not touch the substation, cables or any electrical equipment, and keep children away from them. Check the Merafong City Local Municipality Facebook page for updates on restoration.
