The Merafong City Local Municipality issued the statement on 1 October 2026 after meeting the families of those who lost their lives in the Wedela shooting. Following consultations with the affected families, it was agreed that a joint memorial service will be held in honour of the deceased.
When and where
- Date: Friday 2 October 2026
- Time: 12:00
- Venue: Wedela Community Hall
The municipality's role
The municipality said it will continue to work closely with the bereaved families and relevant stakeholders so that the service gives family members, friends, community members and other stakeholders an appropriate opportunity to pay their respects and honour the lives of those who died.
"Your compassion, prayers and solidarity bring comfort and remind them that they are not alone in their grief. Thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of Ubuntu," the municipality said in its message to the community.
What this means for you
Community members who wish to pay their respects can attend the service at the Wedela Community Hall on Friday at 12:00. Plan for extra traffic and parking demand around the hall during the service.
In its earlier statement on the shooting, the municipality asked residents not to circulate unverified information, images or videos about the incident, and urged anyone with information to report it to the South African Police Service. For municipal enquiries, call 018 788 9500.
