Health Awareness and Service Delivery Initiatives in Merafong City
Merafong City Local Municipality recently advanced its community support and civic service operations through two distinct initiatives: an educational gathering centered on autoimmune disease awareness and a targeted waste management delivery drive aimed at improving local sanitation.
Merafong Hosts Lupus Awareness Programme
The municipality hosted the Merafong Lupus Awareness Programme, bringing together healthcare professionals, municipal officials, faith leaders, and community members to show solidarity with individuals affected by lupus, remember loved ones, and provide education regarding the chronic autoimmune disease. The event was directed by Programme Director Mrs Tshidi Chabane-Xaba.
Key contributors and speakers during the programme addressed clinical, psychological, and personal aspects of the condition:
Lived Experience and Advocacy: Ms Tebogo Kgatitswe, Founder of the Merafong Lupus Awareness Initiative and a lupus warrior, spoke on leveraging lived experience to create platforms offering guidance, awareness, and community hope.
Medical Insights: Dr Tshepang Itu Kgatitswe, a medical doctor, provided clinical explanations regarding the nature and symptoms of lupus.
Mental Health Support: Clinical psychologist Ms Florrinah Sizane addressed the intersection of autoimmune illness and psychological well-being.
Caregiver Perspective: Mr Charles “Dawg” Skhosana, Vice-Chairperson of the Initiative and husband to lupus warrior Mrs Linda Skhosana, highlighted the critical role a robust personal support system plays for patients.
Personal Journey: Ms Yolanda Maluleke shared first-hand reflections on managing day-to-day life with lupus.

Waste Infrastructure Rollout in Khutsong South
In a separate civic effort focused on public health and municipal infrastructure, the municipality executed a waste container distribution drive in Small Village, Khutsong South (Ward 12).
The operation involved the provision of municipal wheelie bins directly to local households, facilitated on-site by administrative personnel and municipal distribution teams. The program aims to establish structured household refuse management, promote clean neighbourhoods, and curb illegal dumping throughout the area.

Through the combined efforts of grassroots health advocacy and hands-on environmental service delivery, these municipal programs reflect ongoing work between local administrators and residents to address wellness, awareness, and living standards within the community.
