2026 Special Olympics South Africa Games Conclude with Triumphs, Medals, and Celebration

The national event officially opened on the afternoon of Friday, 28 August, with the lighting of the Flame of Hope cauldron. Bringing together athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities from all nine provinces, the multi-sport national competition served to fulfill the core mission of Special Olympics: providing year-round sports training and athletic competition to build physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share skills and friendship with families and the broader community.

Highlights of the Games: Determination and Podium Victories

Throughout the three-day competition, participants demonstrated determination across various sporting codes, including football, athletics, swimming, basketball, and table tennis.

Notable Results and Individual Triumphs:

• Football Victory: The North West soccer team secured a 1–0 victory against the Western Cape to claim the top spot in their division.

• Athletics (5000m): Kamogelo Moncho, representing the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, earned 1st place in the fifth division athletic 5000m event.

• Swimming (400m): Lourette Seyffert from the Amelia Centre for the Disabled in Potchefstroom won the bronze medal in the 400m swimming event.

• Table Tennis: Innocentia Msikinya from MM Sebitloane Special School in Taung secured a Gold medal, while Tshireletso Booutlwane from Temoso Special School in Ganyesa earned a Silver medal.

Media and Community Impact

The event brought together law enforcement representatives, government officials, coaches, and spectators who gathered in the stands to support the delegation. As the multi-sport competition served as part of the pathway toward potential selection for Team South Africa at the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile, athletes across all divisions were celebrated for their performances and sportsmanship throughout the weekend.
