South Africans are heading into a crucial voting milestone this weekend as the country prepares for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections. With millions of eligible citizens still missing from the voters' roll, an upcoming nationwide registration drive aims to bridge the gap and ensure every community has a voice in local governance.
The Numbers Game: Who is Registered?
While South Africa's active voter base is growing, a massive portion of the population—particularly young adults, remains entirely off the grid.
Current Voters' Roll: The active electorate sits at 28 million people, up slightly from 27.7 million during the 2024 elections.
The Population Gap: Despite steady growth, an estimated 11 to 12 million eligible citizens are still not registered to vote.
The Youth Deficit: Getting young people involved remains a steep uphill battle, as over 70% of South Africans aged 18–19 are currently unregistered.
What to Expect This Weekend (20–21 June)
If you need to register for the first time, check your status, or update your home address, here are the official logistics for the weekend ahead:
Dates & Times: Voting stations will be open on Saturday, 20 June and Sunday, 21 June 2026, from 08:00 to 17:00 daily.
What to Bring: You must bring a valid form of South African identification. This includes a Smart ID card, a green barcoded ID book, or a Temporary Identity Certificate.
Finding a Station: A massive network of 23,706 voting stations will be active. To ensure no communities are left out, this includes 22,718 permanent buildings, 960 temporary structures, and 28 mobile voting units.
How to Find Your Nearest Voting Station
Because local government elections require you to register and vote in the specific voting district where you live, finding the correct station is essential. The IEC has provided several quick tools to help citizens locate their nearest venue:
The Online Station Finder: You can visit the Voter Information Portal (registertovote.elections.org.za) and navigate to the "Find a Voting Station" map feature. Simply entering your home address will pin-point the correct station for your ward.
WhatsApp Chatbot: Citizens can message the official IEC WhatsApp Chatbot at 060 088 0000, which automatically guides users and redirects them to the relevant location tools.
Mobile App: The official "IEC South Africa" app is available for download on smartphones and allows users to check their current registration information or search for local registration points.
SMS Service: If you are already registered and just want to verify your current station, you can SMS your ID number to 32810 to receive a direct confirmation text.
Infrastructure and Accessibility Behind the Scenes
A massive logistical operation has been deployed behind the scenes to keep the registration process moving quickly and smoothly.
More than 48,000 staff members have been deployed across the country. Field workers will be using 39,641 digital Voter Management Devices (VMDs). These handheld devices have been stress-tested to handle real-time registrations, instantly verify citizen details, and accurately place voters into their correct local wards.
Furthermore, targeted efforts have been made to ensure the election is physically accessible to everyone. Dedicated disability outreach programs are in place. This includes the implementation of a Universal Ballot Template, specific partnerships and specialized training alongside BlindSA to assist visually impaired citizens, and 52 dedicated Municipal Outreach Officers hired directly from the disability sector to oversee station accessibility.
