Flame’s First Stop: Ikalafeng Special School Ignites the 2026 Special Olympics Provincial Relay
Hosted by the North West Provincial Government, the main event will take place in the Bojanala District from 28 to 30 August 2026.
Serving as an integral part of the buildup to the Opening Ceremony, the relay brings together Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement officers, recognized as the Guardians of the Flame. Together, they carry the Flame of Hope across all four provincial districts to generate public awareness, gather financial support for the Special Olympics movement, and champion acceptance, inclusion, and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
2. First Stop: Ikalafeng Special School Welcomes the Torch
The opening leg of the path saw the Flame of Hope make its first stop in Potchefstroom at Ikalafeng Special School, where local leaders, educators, and learners hosted a formal welcoming ceremony.

Ms Matshepo Macheoane: Principal of Ikalafeng Special School

The event featured presentations and learner performances, establishing strong community support as the relay begins its province-wide tour.
3. Next Stop on the Path: Moving to Dr RSM District
With the first stop in Potchefstroom completed, the torch continues its planned route across the North West. On 26 August 2026, the Flame of Hope moves to its next destination in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati (RSM) District, where it will be hosted at MM Sebitloane Special School.

Beginning the relay at Ikalafeng Special School emphasizes the role of local institutions in driving social inclusion. As the Law Enforcement Torch Run moves from its first stop toward the final venue in the Bojanala District, the Flame of Hope continues to highlight the abilities, dignity, and rights of Special Olympics athletes across South Africa.
