City of Matlosana Warns Residents of Fake "Final Demand" Payment Scam
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has issued an urgent public warning to all property owners, businesses, and residents regarding a fraud scheme targeting municipal account holders across the area.

Fraudsters have been distributing falsified notices titled "FINAL DEMAND (TERMINATION NOTICE)" in an attempt to coerce victims into transferring money into an unauthorized bank account.

The scam relies on intimidation, threatening victims with the immediate termination or restriction of municipal services unless a payment—often specified around R6,500.00—is made without delay. These fraudulent letters claim to originate from "Dr. David Stanley Khoza - Senior Manager Creditors Control" and instruct recipients to deposit funds into a Nedbank account before emailing proof of payment to a private address.

Municipal officials have outlined key indicators to help residents distinguish the fraudulent demands from legitimate municipal communications:

The City of Matlosana urges all residents not to pay any money or share personal details if approached via phone or delivered letters. Account holders seeking to verify notices can contact the Finance Department's Credit Control / Revenue Section directly at 018 487 8017 during office hours, or visit an official municipal pay point or the Mayibuye Centre offices. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipal authorities.
