Body and Memory Take Centre Stage at Momentum Aardklop
The Momentum Aardklop line-up features Thembi and Thalente Duo: Women in Art, an exhibition celebrating female creative voices. Hosted at the NWU Gallery, the showcase brings together two Durban-based photographers whose work examines how identity, history, and the human form intersect through a lens.
Both artists are graduates of the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Their shared exhibition focuses on the body as a living archive, placing Black identity and personal narrative at the heart of the space.
Two Approaches to a Shared Medium
While sharing a joint space, each artist approaches the camera from a distinct angle:
- Thembi Mthembu focuses on self-portraiture. Her imagery examines individual identity, body perception, and the physical form.
- Thalente Khomo turns her camera toward memory. Her photographs document personal and ancestral histories, preserving moments that might otherwise slip away.
Together, the two collections create a visual conversation. The images ask how photography can hold personal stories and pass them along to future generations.

The showcase runs on the First Floor of the NWU Gallery as part of the festival's visual arts programme.
