Flame’s Second Stop: MM Sebitloane Special School Welcomes the Law Enforcement Torch Run

Serving as an integral part of the buildup to the main event, scheduled for 28 to 30 August 2026 in the Bojanala District, the relay features Special Olympics athletes alongside law enforcement officers, known as the Guardians of the Flame. Together, they are carrying the Flame of Hope across all four provincial districts in the North West to build public awareness, gather financial support for the Special Olympics movement, and champion acceptance, inclusion, and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Second Stop: Community and Educational Leaders Host the Relay

At MM Sebitloane Special School, the arrival of the Flame of Hope was celebrated with a formal hosting ceremony involving school staff, learners, community advocates, and law enforcement representatives.

Key Elements of the Second Stop:

• Guardian Presence: Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) escorted the torch onto school grounds to present it to the learners and faculty.

• Athlete Engagement: Special Olympics athletes participating in the event held and displayed the Flame of Hope alongside municipal officials and law enforcement leadership.

• Awareness Advocacy: The event focused on building localized support for rural special education institutions while highlighting the athletic capabilities of youth with intellectual disabilities.

The Next Leg: Journeying to Ngaka Modiri Molema District

With its second stop in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District completed, the torch relay continues its planned trajectory toward the Opening Ceremony. The Flame of Hope moves to its third stop at Bophelong Special School in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District on 27 August 2026, before making its final arrival in the Bojanala District on 28 August 2026.

Expanding Inclusion Across the Province

The successful hosting of the Flame of Hope at MM Sebitloane Special School highlights the expanding reach of the Special Olympics movement across the North West.
