Annual Free Rabies Vaccination Drive Returns to West Acres

The initiative targets dogs aged three months and older. Organisers have specified that cats will not be vaccinated at this event. To maintain order and safety, all dogs must remain on a leash while on site.

Rabies remains a fatal viral infection once symptoms appear. The virus affects the central nervous system and offers no cure or treatment after onset. Inoculating domestic dogs prevents transmission from local wildlife such as bats and jackals, as well as stray animals.

Because rabies is a zoonotic disease, it moves between animals and humans through bites, scratches, or contact with infected saliva. Maintaining high vaccination rates among domestic pets forms a barrier that prevents the virus from entering households and wider neighbourhoods. High population coverage also prevents community-wide outbreaks.

Under South African law, rabies vaccinations are compulsory for all dogs. Pet owners are required to keep their animal's immunisation up to date.
