Tensions Rise as Milner High School Cancels 2026 Matric Farewell

Tensions remain high among parents and Grade 12 learners following Milner High School’s decision to officially cancel the 2026 Matric Farewell, which was scheduled to take place on 23 September 2026. Notice of the cancellation was issued on 18 August 2026—just 36 days before the planned event.

School Management Cites Disciplinary and Academic Breakdown

According to an official letter issued to parents by Principal Sam Lupuwana, the cancellation comes as a direct response to persistent academic underperformance, poor class attendance, a refusal to attend afternoon support sessions, and a general lack of self-discipline among the Grade 12 cohort.

The school highlighted that the group's conduct during their recent "40 Days" celebrations was unacceptable, stating that learners brought the school's reputation into disrepute. School management reiterated in the circular that a matric farewell remains a privilege rather than a right, emphasizing that the institution could not associate itself with a group that has failed to show adequate commitment to their education throughout the year. The school also formally distanced itself from any unofficial after-parties or private functions.

Regarding official event fees, the school confirmed that parents who paid the R600 booking fee are eligible for a refund form to credit their school fee accounts or receive a bank transfer.

Parents and Learners Express Frustration Over Financial Impact

The late notice has sparked significant outcry from affected families and well-behaved learners who feel unfairly penalized by a blanket decision.

Many parents had already completed financial preparations for the evening—spending thousands of rands on custom-designed dresses, suits, footwear, jewelry, vehicle rentals, and professional photographers. Because these third-party expenses are non-refundable, families face heavy financial losses just weeks before the exam season.

Learners also questioned the timing of the decision, noting that similar disruptive behavior during "40 Days" celebrations had occurred in previous years without leading to the cancellation of the farewell. Well-behaved students who consistently attended extra classes and maintained high academic standards expressed disappointment that individual disciplinary measures were not applied to the specific offenders, rather than penalizing the entire grade.

When questioned about why compliant students were expected to intervene, learners pointed out that peers hold no authority over individuals who refuse to adhere to adult direction.
