Missing Person Search: Potchefstroom SAPS is requesting assistance to locate 60-year-old Jurie Jacobus "Jaco" Pieters, missing since 5 August after being dropped off at Mooirivier Mall. Road & Infrastructure Frustrations: Waterlogging, sewage leaks, and unpaved, damaged roads in Sarafina Street (Ikageng) and Elsenbroek Street (industrial area) have sparked safety concerns and business disruptions. JB Marks Municipality has dispatched teams to drain water and fix leaking pipes on site.
Small Business Compliance Crackdown: A joint operation on 14 August by JB Marks Municipality and law enforcement targeted non-compliant small businesses in Potchefstroom. Out of 12 inspected businesses, only one had a valid Certificate of Acceptability. Issues including illegal connections, fire safety breaches, and unverified documentation of foreign operators were addressed.
Promosa Bulk Sewer & Pipe Upgrades: A series of temporary road closures, starting with Louis Le Grange Street and extending to Piet Bosman, Hoffman, and Peter Mokaba Streets through October, are taking place due to the Promosa-Poortjie Dam Bulk Sewer Line upgrade. Meanwhile, an accidental pipe break during construction temporarily disrupted water supply across several suburbs, including the CBD, Bult, and Miederpark.
Water Interruptions in Ikageng and Potchindustria: An urgent shutdown at the Ikageng Pumping Station was enacted on 24 August to safely reposition internal pipelines and improve supply reliability.
Botha Street Sewage Pump Repairs: Infrastructure strain at the Botha Street sewage pump station, which handles roughly 80% of Potch’s sewage, caused odor and overflow complaints following a vehicle accident on 7 August that damaged on-site piping. Temporary pumping solutions are managing the flow until permanent repairs are installed.
New Speed Cameras on N12: To curb reckless driving and protect pedestrians near Die Wilge High School, new speed enforcement cameras were officially launched at the N12 and Rocher Street intersection.
Disconnection Scam Alert: JB Marks Municipality issued a warning regarding fraudulent WhatsApp and SMS messages threatening immediate service disconnections unless payments are made to fake accounts. Official municipal banking details should always be verified directly.
Council Debates & Treasury Funds: At the ordinary council meeting on 25 August, municipal leadership addressed concerns over unallocated funds and debt to Eskom, which led to National Treasury temporarily withholding the city’s equitable share transfer. Land usage and heritage site budgets were also discussed.
Power Restored to Ventersdorp Substation: Following months of load curtailment, Eskom technicians installed and integrated a new 10MVA transformer at the Ventersdorp Intake Substation to restore stability to the local grid.
Poortjiedam Substation Vandalism: Early on 28 August, vandalism at the Poortjiedam Substation caused power outages across Promosa and Mohadin while municipal technicians worked on emergency repairs.

Tragic Collisions on Regional Roads:
A two-vehicle collision on 22 August on the R501 (Viljoenskroon Road) resulted in 2 fatalities and 5 injuries.
A multi-vehicle crash on the N12 on 22 August resulted in 1 fatality and serious injuries.
A devastating three-vehicle accident on the N12 near Lekwena on 26 August claimed 4 lives, including local handyman Rudi Enslin (53) and two of his children, Jessica (13) and Hannes (18).
Witrand Hospital Incident: A long-term female patient at Witrand Specialised Hospital absconded from her ward early on 26 August and tragically died after being struck by a vehicle on Promosa Road. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
Bicycle Robbery & Community Kindness: 12-year-old Juan-Liam Heeringa was mugged near the local golf course and had his birthday bicycle stolen. Following widespread community support, the Gimmies Mountain Bike Club and local donors presented him with a brand-new bicycle just days later.
Cachet Park Security Success: Visible patrols and active CCTV monitoring by the Cachet Park CID team, alongside Mooirivier Beskerming, successfully disarmed two suspects carrying knives and detained another individual in possession of suspected stolen tools.

Potchefstroom Kinderfees 2026: The 9th annual Kinderfees will take place during the October school holidays (28 September – 2 October) at the Gereformeerde Kerk Potchefstroom-Oos. The program is free for Grade R to Grade 7 learners upon registration.
Support for PAWS Haven: Student couple Jessi Walne and Jayden Trusler highlighted the town's need for pet-friendly housing through their daily commitment to visit their rescue dog, Rusty, at PAWS Haven until suitable accommodation is found.
