Emergency Water Interruptions Impact Merafong City Following Infrastructure Failure
The Merafong City Local Municipality has issued an official public notice informing residents and local entities of an emergency water supply interruption. The alert, dated 23 July 2026, stems from urgent repair work currently being conducted by bulk water supplier Rand Water on its main E9 pipeline.

Failure of E9 Valve Triggers Emergency Repair Operations
According to official details released by Rand Water and communicated through the municipality, the emergency intervention was necessitated by a failure of the sluice mechanism within the E9 valve. This mechanical breakdown resulted in an immediate shutdown of the primary water flow through the pipeline.
While technical teams have already commenced repair work on site, authorities have confirmed that the exact duration required to complete the valve replacement remains unconfirmed at this stage.
Affected Areas and Impact on Bulk Infrastructure
The compromised E9 pipeline serves as a vital supply route for the Rand Water Driefontein Reservoir. As water levels within the reservoir continue to decline during the downtime, municipal authorities have cautioned that several key residential communities and mining facilities may experience severe low water pressure or complete supply interruptions.
The impacted areas specifically identified in the notice include:
Wedela
Harmony Mines (including Deelkraal, Kusasalethu, Mponeng, Savuka, Tautona, and No 9 Residence)
Mohaleshoek
Kokosi
Greenspark
Fochville

Municipal Response and Ongoing Mitigation Measures
In light of the interruption, the Merafong City Local Municipality, under the direction of Municipal Manager Dumisani D. Mabuza, has urged all residents and commercial consumers to exercise extreme restraint and use water sparingly.
The local government confirmed that it is in continuous communication with Rand Water to monitor progress and stabilize bulk supply. To mitigate future risks and manage current demand, the municipality is actively intensifying local leak detection, enhancing repair efforts, and optimizing distribution networks to reduce system losses. The administration expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused while work continues to fully restore service.
