Potchefstroom’s Golden Moment: Jan-Hendrik Heymans Dominates the Javelin

The headline moment of the championships belonged to North-West University (NWU, Potchefstroom) star Jan-Hendrik Heymans, who claimed South Africa’s solitary gold medal with a masterclass performance in the men’s javelin throw final.

The 19-year-old Potchefstroom athlete arrived in Oregon as the event favourite and systematically outclassed the competition. Heymans opened with a commandingly long throw of 76.92m, which immediately placed him in position for the title. On his sixth and final attempt, he launched a massive 80.50m, establishing a new personal best, setting the world U20 lead for 2026, and defeating his nearest competitor by more than six metres.

Heymans' golden triumph cements Potchefstroom's status as a world-class training ground for elite field events and marks a major stepping stone toward senior international success.

Double Silver Delight for Ramokgopa and Record Relay

Hurdling sensation Tumi Ramokgopa emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, capturing two silver medals across both hurdles disciplines. She clocked an impressive 12.96 seconds in the women's 100m hurdles before charging to a personal best of 55.88 seconds in the 400m hurdles final.

The squad added a third silver medal in dramatic fashion during the men’s 4x400m relay. Anchored by 400m individual medallist Leendert Koekemoer, the South African quartet crossed the line in 3:02.76, breaking the African U20 record to secure second place.

Bronze Surge on the Track and in the Field

South Africa's podium tallies were further buoyed by four outstanding bronze medal efforts:

• Jaco van Dyk (Men’s Shot Put): Opened South Africa’s medal count early in the competition by hurling a personal best of 19.80m to claim bronze.

• Marko Ferreira (Men’s 100m): Blazed through the premier sprint final in 10.16 seconds to capture a bronze medal against a fierce global field.

• Leendert Koekemoer (Men’s 400m): Ran a sensational 44.96 seconds, just 0.02s off his junior national record, to claim 400m bronze before his relay heroic effort.

• Matodzi Ndou (Men’s 400m Hurdles): Executed a well-paced race in the one-lap hurdle final to earn bronze in 49.90 seconds.
