Flame of Hope Ignites in Potch to Light the Way for the 2026 Special Olympics South Africa Games

On 25 August 2026, the initial torch relay kicks off at Ikalafeng Special School in Potchefstroom (Dr Kenneth Kaunda District), starting a four-day provincial movement dedicated to unity, inclusion, and elite athletic performance.

The nationwide multi-sport event, running from 28 to 30 August 2026 at Hoërskool Rustenburg, will gather approximately 670 athletes and coaches representing all nine South African provinces. Hosted by Special Olympics South Africa (SOSA) alongside the national Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) and the North West Provincial Government, the Games celebrate the transformative impact of sport for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Torch Relay: From Potchefstroom Across the North West

As the starting point of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), Potchefstroom establishes the momentum for the entire provincial campaign. Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local law enforcement, serving as official Guardians of the Flame, will escort the torch from Potchefstroom through special education schools and civic centers across four major districts.

• 25 August 2026 (Grand Start in Potchefstroom): The official ignition takes place at Ikalafeng Special School in Potchefstroom (Dr Kenneth Kaunda District), uniting teachers, officers, and community members to launch the national relay.

• 26 August 2026: The Flame travels to MM Sebitloane Special School (Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District) to champion rural inclusion.

• 27 August 2026: The relay reaches Bophelong Special School (Ngaka Modiri Molema District) to build widespread support for disability rights.

• 28 August 2026 (Final Arrival): The torch makes its way from the Bojanala District Civic Centre into Hoërskool Rustenburg (Bojanala Platinum District) to light the cauldron for the Opening Ceremony.

High Stakes: Competition & Pathway to Santiago 2027

Following the torch arrival, athletes will compete across seven sporting codes: Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Football, Netball, Swimming, and Table Tennis.

Beyond national honors, performances in Rustenburg serve as the main selection event for Team South Africa ahead of the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile. Marking the first time the global event is hosted in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere, the Santiago Games will host over 6,000 athletes from 170 nations. Team South Africa carries strong momentum into this campaign after earning 49 medals (22 Gold, 20 Silver, 7 Bronze) at the 2023 World Games in Berlin.
