Facing a significant increase in incoming animals, the shelter aims to facilitate adoption placements to ensure each rescue receives necessary care and to create capacity for future rescues.
The Operational Reality: Resource Demands and Intake Numbers
According to data shared by Paws Haven, the shelter has experienced a high volume of young intakes, averaging approximately 50 puppies per month since May. Recent shelter metrics highlight the operational challenge: while 28 puppies found homes over a three-month period, generating R21,800 in adoption fees, the costs associated with feeding, medical treatment, and emergency care continuously exceed fee revenue.
The shelter reports weekly food expenses of roughly R1,500, alongside additional costs for managing conditions such as tummy viruses, which cost approximately R1,800 per puppy to treat. For every animal adopted, shelter intake statistics indicate that multiple new animals are surrendered or brought in to fill the vacant space.
