Temporary Road Closures Announced in Potchefstroom for Infrastructure Upgrades
These disruptions are necessary to safely facilitate construction work on the ongoing Upgrading of the Promosa and Poortjiedam Bulk Sewer Line project.
Following a comprehensive risk assessment, municipal planners identified multiple underground utilities running parallel to the affected streets, including high-voltage electrical cables, water pipes, sewer lines, and storm water infrastructure. To mitigate the risk of accidental damage during heavy excavation and to ensure public safety, full road closures will be implemented in phases rather than partial lane restrictions. Temporary traffic-control measures, including barricades, directional signage adhering to the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual (SARTSM), and trained flag personnel, will be active during peak travel periods. Water trucks will also be deployed regularly for dust suppression in surrounding residential areas.
Schedule of Road Closures and Traffic Diversions
Louis Le Grange Street: Closed from 24 August 2026 to 27 August 2026. Traffic will be diverted via Jeppe Street and Fontein Street.
Piet Bosman Street: Closed from 7 September 2026 to 11 September 2026. Traffic will be diverted via Retief Street and Dwars Street.
Hoffman Street: Closed from 28 September 2026 to 7 October 2026. Traffic will be diverted via Maree Street and the R53.
Peter Mokaba Street: Closed from 12 October 2026 to 21 October 2026. Traffic will be diverted via Spruit Street and the R53.
